The Roman Empire at the time of Heraclius
When Heraclius was crowned, the geography of the Roman Byzantine Empire looked like this:
• The Core: Anatolia (modern Turkiye), Greece, and
the Balkans.
• Egypt: The Breadbasket (provided grains to feed
Constantinople).
• The Levant: Syria, Palestine, and Jordan (Arabia
Petraea).
• The Western Remnants: North Africa (Carthage—
where Heraclius came from), Sicily, and small coastal
strips of Italy (including Rome and Ravenna).
